Last night, Dick was in Melbourne and skanking to the wee hours at a gig - one of his favourite ska bands.

05c_office interview at0005This afternoon he has driven back to Melbourne and we are conducting a long interview with him in Digital Zoo’s meeting room.

It’s 1:30 and we have spent an hour to setting up the room before Dick arrives. The forecast for today: fine, hot, then partly cloudy with light N & NE'lies. – in fact the temperature will get to 32.

Gradually the outside heat and sunshine combined with the lights inside make the room warmer and warmer. Combine this with Dick’s fatigue and it is a low energy day.

We go through a pile of prints and transparencies with Dick – him talking about each shot as well as answering my questions about his motivations and methodology.

(One thing we don’t cover in the doco is the fact that Dick’s skills extend well beyond photography – he’s does very cool illustrations. Exhibit A: Dick’s pictures have graced the many of the CD single covers of the Australian ska band, Area 7. Appropriately his work includes the song: “Nobody likes a bogan.” - featuring a mulleted flannel shirted bogan & girlfriend in front of his Aussie Muscle Car…)

05a_office_interview_cuOf course one of the best moments we capture is when we are packing things up and Dick starts talking about the time he approached one of the oil companies.

So by the end of the day it feels like I really have enough material to put something together.

And, like so many stages of this production, I still think this will only be a matter of weeks…
