Steve and I leave for Kyneton about 7:30am.

The setting up of the recording facilities and recording of the foley is very smooth. Steve engineers the session and Gerry wields his synchronised magic.

(At this point I should confess that I am a foley-geek. The adding, re-inforcing and replacement of incidental & envirmental noises & effects has always fascinated me. Star Wars' sound design got me started. I try and hide my disturbing enthusiasm from Steve and Gerry.)

The foley sessions help with the earliest footage where we are just using the on-camera mike (a cardinal sound sin) and the radio mike moments where there is no other sound except Dick's voice.

God, Gerry is Good. Soon we have camera bags scrunching, footsteps landing on cement, etc. The bits he does to cover Dick's hands holding, grasping and patting photo prints are spot on.

We also had time to add noises for the Dingo at Avalon Beach (collar sounds, paws padding on the gravel and dog panting.

The lone bicyclist proves a challenge and we are soon out and around looking for a bike wheel to record. We're out of luck and finally settle for some bike chassis shake.

Only near the end, when we have to dub the finished mixes back to the camera do we have any technical problems - and that is simply a matter of finding the right combo of inputs and switches.

It's all over by 3:30. I'm really pleased - especially with dog noise!

I have put about 90% of the foley in place.

I showed LH to my old friend, Max Davis, and he made some very helpful suggestions as to how it could be made leaner and better. (Max is an old buddy of mine - we spent many mispent hours in the early 90s talking about the films we wanted to make, and the scripts ideas we had. Max went to AFTRS and I wound up at Empire Ridge doing multimedia.)

I'm now making a few suggested removals and rearrangements and am already noticing the improvements... The end is so close I can smell it...

In Digital Zoo’s storeroom I record Will Trumble riding his bike as well as spinning the wheel. Who knows, maybe indoor mountain biking will catch on.) This will be added to the Mystery Bicylist Foley. I have also added the sound of tinkly bell (as a parallel of the car horns) to the guy on the bike.

My notes on Max's Feedback - mainly
the removal of my more juvenile editorial impulses and one or
two repetitions.

I found a scanned copy of the Nikon FE Manual on-line. I have added several modified pages that include images of Dick. Subtle, huh?
