In the beginning was the photos
Of course I’ve known about it for a long time.
Over the years, I have watched Dick's photographs grow to fill
many, many sheets of transparencies.
And a point that I couldn't make in the documentary is that his
subject matter extends well beyond petrol stations & milk-bars.
There's his series on rusted letters scratched into rusted metal.
And those artful uncommon shots of what I'd call "common
weeds" - now they would at home in any book of Australian
fauna.
Did I mention the fantastic collection of fluorescent coloured
objects that Dick has photographed – from pink caravans
through to lemon yellow motor-mowers?
Lost Highways is really just one thin slice of a much bigger
pie. A damn fine appetiser.
