CatDV Pro
http://www.squarebox.co.uk/catdv/
Working demo available.
the media manager for DV - a fully cross-platform media asset management system.
First up - it has built in scene detection for DV - either timecode based or visual. Capture a tape and it will separate every shot, as well as record the date, time, length of the shot, even the camera settings.
It will also create a thumbnail catalogue & Quicktime previews - about 250MB for a 60min tape. (In fact, it can do this for any QuickTime supported media files including still images, audio files and movies.) You can then review, rename & categorise all your footage and this results in a searchable catalogue which can be viewed & filtered by bin, by date, by any criteria you care to imagine.
You can also play a thumbnail version (with sound) of any shot. For logging tapes it is perfection. Once you have selected the shots you want you then export your "Go Shots" (amongst other formats) as an FCP batch list.
In FCP, you import the list and get FCP to capture it at your desired quality level... Wunderbar!.
Cat DV Pro also captures at FCP's Offline-JPEG resolution - so who needs FCP to recapture when you export the shots you want and simply tell it to reconnect... CATDV Pro maps also maps its catalogue fields to match FCP's.
Try it and then try and live without it.
